The Great Gatsby (pages 11-26)


  • "I've got a nice place here, he said, his eyes flushing about restlessly."
  • The guest normally says that the house is nice, not the other way around like it is done at the beginning  the story
  • Wan - pale
  • Languidly -  slowly; almost relaxed
  • Daisy is looking for a moment (always looking ahead)
  • She's always on to something\
  • Daisy, Nick, Tom, Miss Baker were the only ones in the room when they received a phone call
  • Daisy is totally self absorbed
  • Unobtrusively - not upset with each other but doing it at the same time 
  • Claret - wine
  • Tom's racist : "It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things."
  • Extemporizing- speaking off the top of your head
  • Shrill metallic urgency - ringing of the phone
  • gloom- designed to reflect the moon
  • Page 16-17 : "All right, I said 'I'm g;ad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool- that's the best things a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." -Daisy
  • Peremptorily- cut off before it happened
  • Mysterious - not happy
