Let Me Walk You Through The Pedestrain
Ray Bradbury first wrote this story "The Pedestrian" in the mid 1900's, technology wasn't as big as it is now but he was able to express his feelings and experiences with technology. In fact he even takes a glance at the future and the year is 2053. He decided to take a walk, which is somewhat like a tradition to him and the odd thing is that he seems to be the only one in society to be going out for a walk. The theme of this story happens to be technology and the impact that has on society (lack of imagination and individualism). He uses his experiences to write to us and explain how technology will change in the future and how things will be different drastically different than what they are now.
The plot of this story is that a guy decides to go out for a walk one day and often looks around his fellow neighbors, who are just watching television. As he continues his walk, he is stopped by a police car and the police officer asks him some questions such as 'Business or profession" and "Are you married, Mr Lead?" We could notice that the story is being told in the future normally whenever someone is stopped by a police officer they don't ask these type of questions. When he answers the questions he answers in a sarcastic way and the officer finds his responses unsatisfactory. Mr. Lead answering with "I'm a writer" when the cop asked what he works as, it was considered as unemployment to the police officer. He was arrested because his behavior of going on walks was something that was not normal for the society that surrounded him
The tone of the story is loneliness because he feels alone and isolated because technology has changed the majority of society. Most people have stopped interacting with people and are now locked in their homes watching televisions. For example, in the first paragraph he says, "he was alone in this world of 2053 A.D." Mr. Lead felt alone in this new world that technology has completely taken over and he feels as if it's complicated to talk to people now a days. Another quote is "To enter out into that silence that was the city at eight o'clock of a misty evening in November" and this just comes to show that the things that were once done aren't important anymore. For instance, right now there are still a few of us who go out on walks and go out with friends but this demonstrates that in the future the streets or other popular places are going to be more lonely. In the future we're going to be lonely and stop communicating/interacting with those who are important to simply because technology will be taking over us.
The characters in this story are all the same, they're just inside their homes using their technology devices. The only one who is different to all these people is Mr. Lead, he's the only one who is not caught up with technology. Instead he prefers to go on walks and enjoy nature, which is something that not everyone is used to seeing in 2053. Throughout time, techbology and other things are going to get better and that's not really a good thing. It will lead us to change and start thinking that the things that people do in the future that someone in the past would do, is wrong when it really isn't. Mr. Lead didn't let anyone influence his thoughts and feelings on taking walks rather than being home watching t.v.
In conclusion, Bradbury have us a sneak peek on how things are going to be in the future if we choose to let technology take over us. He used his experiences to describe how simply taking a walk at night, was considered suspicious and abnormal since no other person would do such a thing anymore.
