Young Goodman Brown Questions

1. I think that Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story was to show us that there is a good and bad side in all of us. I also think that Hawthorne wanted us to know that there are people who act differently and don't show their true identity to society.
2. After reading the story, I agree that Brown's wife is "aptly named Faith" because throughout the story we can tell that Goodman Brown is a very faithful in his religion but things took a turn when he went to a party and saw the evil in her.  I think that Faith's name fits her personality because she still shows that she cares about Goodman Brown and she'll be waiting for him to come home. Brown does not faith in her because he himself turns into a devil during the middle of the story.
3.  I think the pink ribbons signify a sign of happiness found in their marriage. As the story went on and Brown was in the forest he started to doubt the pure good in people and the significance of the pink ribbon went down. This means that the devil has made him change his thought on the only thing that was holy and pure to him, which was faith.
4. Brown was unsure if the evil events he was going through were real or if they were simply just dreams. If it was just a dream, then it would come from Brown's head which was clear indication of evil. On the other hand if they were real, then Brown would see that everyone around him is actually corrupt and this came to his mind because he a man full of curiosity.
5.I think the old man is really the devil. The textual clues that tell me this are, "...his staff , which bore the likeness of a black snake." Usually black snakes or any snakes in general symbolize the devil since there are people who most of the time end up dying if they get bitten by one, such as Adam and  Eve.
6. I think the staff represents the devil leading onward because he persuades Young Goodman Brown to keeping walking further into the forest although he thinks it's not best for him to keep walking. This makes him the primary motivator of Brown deciding to keep on walking.
7. If Brown had not ventured into the forest then his life would be different because he wouldn't have died with bad people, but instead he would've been at home with his wife Faith. He would still have seen his wife as a good and trustful wife and he wouldn't see the evil in his fellow townmates.
