My Essay Essay

What is Nathaniel Hawthorne's theme of the story and how does this relate to the real world ? I personally believe that there are multiple themes in this story but one that really stuck out to me was that there is as much evil as there is good in a person. This meaning that there are times where people make us think that they are something they're not and only time will allow us to see what someone's intentions really are. As much as we hate to admit it, it's not only in stories where good people also turn out to be evil but this is something that occurs in the real world. For instance at the beginning of the story, "Young Goodman Brown," Brown seems to be full of faith since he his wife Faith was pure and good, but everything changes when he discovers something when he was taking his walk through the forest. The old man with a staff (the devil) that he encounters is trying to make him see that Faith also has evil in her just like everyone else. He loses all the faith he once had when he hears Faith's voice at the ceremony and seems to start to believe that there's no good in the world. It's devastating to see that things can suddenly change once you hear or see the way someone really is because it finally opens up your eyes and helps you see that at the end of the day there's evil in everyone. This part of the story relates to the real world because there are times where we think to ourselves "Oh she's really nice and is very innocent so she wouldn't do that." Most of the time it's hard to admit that someone really played with our feelings by making us think they're something they're not. Poor Goodman Brown had to come face to face with the devil to help him open his eyes and see the real Faith. Why do we have to suffer from betrayal ? I feel like life would be so much easier if we got a signal to not trust someone because this will prevent heartbreak and terrible things from happening.
